Where to find Western food in Singapore
In Singapore, it is often said that there is almost no reason for any foreigner to feel homesick – when it comes to food! Singapore, often known as a food paradise, offers a wide variety of cuisines, from Western to Russian to even Mongolian. Due to the growing immigrant nature of those living in Singapore, more and more restaurants and eateries have been popping up across the island offering original international cuisine.
One of the most popular international cuisines that are available here is Western food. In fact, Western dishes such as fish and chips and steaks are almost considered to be part of our local dishes due to its ubiquitous nature. In Singapore, you can easily find Western food not only in restaurants but also in food centres in the suburb areas and schools. It is not unusual to find an aging Chinese, Malay or Indian uncle/auntie serving up plates of fish and chips with a side of baked beans and salad at food centres here. In some cases, Western food has seen local elements added into the dish to spice it up, such as Masala Fish and Chips, in which the batter is mixed with Indian spices. The upside to the easily available Western food means that you can enjoy your meals and choose to pay either a few dollars for your food or up to tens of dollars.
However, despite that, there are definitely some places which are a must when it comes to dining on authentic Western food. Read on to find out more about where you can find Western food in Singapore, and the price range you can expect to pay.
Considering the fact that Tony Roma’s originated from the United States, it is no surprise that one of the best Western meals a person can have is from this chain restaurant. Tony Roma’s is known for its perfectly done rack of baby back ribs, burgers and the variety of steaks it offers. Staying true to its American tradition, Tony Roma’s serves up a pretty huge portion sometimes even requiring two to three people to share to finish the meal.

Swensen’s
Yet another American restaurant chain, Swensen’s has become almost a household name when it comes to Western food dining. The restaurant started out almost 20 years back as an ice-cream parlour originating from San Francisco, but grew to become a full-scale restaurant serving American favourites such as steaks and burgers and chips. Swensen’s is quite easily found around Singapore as its 20 plus outlets are quite evenly spread around the island. However, unlike Tony Roma’s generous American style portioning, Swensen’s portion appears to be more geared towards the Asian’s food consumption, which may not be as filling for some. But there is always the interesting ice-cream sundaes and waffles that you can add on to complete your meal!
Estimated price per person: $20 onwards
Botak Jones is an ideal place to have authentic Western food, as it not only offers large American-style portions; it’s also pretty cheap. An American man, Bernie, who relocated to Singapore, started Botak Jones in 2006 to serve up affordable Western cuisine to Singaporeans. Botak Jones is well known for its appetizers such as the stuffed jalapenos and Caesar Salad and main dishes such as steaks, Cajun chicken and grilled salmon. Due to Botak Jone’s heartlands and industrial area locations, the pricing here is lower than many other Western restaurants in Singapore.
Estimated price per person: $15 onwards
